04 Jul Happy Birthday America
How do you wish someone a happy birthday knowing that it hasn’t been the best of years or even the best of lifetimes? Do you fake your way through platitudes, not expressing the reality of her condition- trying to “fix” her even though she just wants to talk? It’s taken me years, decades actually, to be at peace with just bearing witness to someone’s pain, their situation; holding a place of reverence for them while they are with me, not trying to “fix” anyone or anything, so I shall do just that- listen to her, love her and empathize with her soul to soul.
Her journey goes back to indigenous people who loved her and basked in all her natural resources, never taking too much and always thanking her while they lived with her. At some point, settlers landed on her shores claiming her land, natural powers, and her rights. She never questioned them, knowing she always had enough for her biological children as well as the adopted ones. Her only wish, deepest desire actually, was that they all share with one another.
“Love isn’t a commodity and never runs out. There’s always enough to go around.”
Soon that promise gave way as well as many others. She never had a say to her natural resources again, who should benefit from them (ideally all), and who was welcome to visit her or stay as long as they needed. Wars and battles were fought which ravaged her soul. Borders, walls, and barriers were put in place to “protect” her. Decisions were made, are being made on a daily basis, without her consent.
Protection from whom? she asks. Who are you protecting me from? I have plenty of land, my resources are bountiful if you use them wisely and in moderation, and my natural beauty is known worldwide. Give me an opportunity to love. Look what I have to offer to so many who need a home, nourishment of the soul, a kind glance, an empathetic ear, refuge during a storm. Don’t discount my abilities because you think I can’t love all beings. Love isn’t a commodity and never runs out. There’s always enough to go around.
Soul to soul, sister to sister, I wish America the happiest of birthdays. I hear you. I see you. I love you.
